This page does not ask you to take its word. Everything comes from a single public file of the European Environment Agency, and the figure is recalculated in five minutes:

  1. Download the official WWTP file: UWWTPS.csv (2023 call, public final version). Context and dataset sheet, at the European Agency and in the Spain factsheet.
  2. Keep the Spanish plants: repCode starting with ES. There are 2.357.
  3. Discard those in which either figure is missing or is zero. That leaves 2.168 assessable.
  4. Count how many have uwwLoadEnteringUWWTP > uwwCapacity. The count is 229.
  5. The definitions of both fields are in the Eionet data dictionary, en inglés: uwwCapacity, Organic design capacity (p.e.) of the waste water treatment plant (capacidad orgánica de diseño de la planta, en habitantes equivalentes), y uwwLoadEnteringUWWTP, Load entering UWWTP (p.e.) (carga entrante en la planta, en habitantes equivalentes). Las traducciones entre paréntesis son nuestras. Comparten unidad: la comparación es la que ambos campos existen para permitir.
